Herniated Disc Syndrome in West Bloomfield, MI
A herniated disc is one of the most common sources of back pain in America, particularly in older people and people who work manual labor jobs that put constant strain on the spine.
Herniated disc syndrome can be prevented or even reversed, particularly if it’s diagnosed early. Therefore, it’s crucial to seek chiropractic care at the first signs of a disc injury.
What Is a Herniated Disc?
We have discs between our vertebra that act as cushions or shock absorbers from the daily pounding on our spine. These discs are soft and spongy on the inside and have a harder outer shell. Through the regular wear and tear that comes with aging or daily pressure on our spine, these discs can break down. The outer shell can harden and crack, and the inner spongy tissue can leak out, pressing on the surrounding nerves that run through the spinal column.
What Are the Symptoms of a Herniated Disc?
A herniated disc is often misdiagnosed because the pain might radiate to another part of the body. Our spine is a complex system with nerves running through that travel to our arms and legs.
If we have a herniated disc in the cervical spine—the vertebra running through the neck pain and discomfort will radiate through the arms and often down into the hands. If the affected disc is in the lumbar spine of the lower back, we’ll feel pain and discomfort through the buttocks, sometimes in the hips, and down the legs and into the feet.
The pain is generally felt as a dull ache, sharp stabbing pains, weakness or numbness, tingling, or pins and needless. The pain might subside while our body is in different positions.
How Is a Herniated Disc Treated?
Your chiropractor will use spinal manipulation and adjustments to relieve the pain and discomfort caused by herniated disc syndrome. Realigning the spine by applying gentle pressure will increase the space between the vertebra and reduce the pressure on the affected nerve.
