Muscle Stimulation Therapy in Waterford, MI
While spinal adjustments are what makes chiropractors stand out from other health professionals, chiropractic treatment includes a wide array of non-invasive treatment options. One of those is muscle stimulation.
Electric muscle aids healing by reducing inflammation, preventing muscle spasms, strengthening muscles, and reducing pain.
What is Muscle Stimulation?
During muscle stimulation therapy – or “muscle stim” – electrodes are placed on the skin surrounding the injured area, whether it’s the legs, arms, neck, back or abdomen. The electrodes are connected to a electric stimulation machine.
The electrodes send light electrical pulses to the tissue, the intensity of which is controlled by the chiropractor depending on the severity of the injury, and with the patient’s input.
The electric pulses mimic the signals our central nervous system transmits to our nervous system that causes muscles to contract.
The goal is to receive pulses that are at the highest intensity tolerable, without experiencing any painful burning or stabbing sensations.
How Does Muscle Stimulation Work?
The contraction of the muscles in muscle stimulation therapy improves blood flow to injured areas and so helps reduce inflammation. It also helps loosen up tight muscles that are restricting the range of motion.
The electrical pulses also trigger the release of endorphins, which are the body’s natural painkillers.
What is Muscle Stimulation Effective in Treating?
Muscle stimulation therapy is usually used to treat sports injuries such as sprains and strained muscles, arthritis, sciatica and scoliosis.
Because muscle stim is effective in improving strength in atrophied muscles, it’s used in the prevention of muscle atrophy that occurs from musculoskeletal injuries to ligaments, tendons, joints, and bones after a period of inactivity.
Muscle stim has even been used to treat facial muscles affected by Bell’s palsy.
