Degenerative Disc Remedies in Waterford, MI
Degenerative disc disease is one of the most common causes of neck and back pain, particularly as we age. It occurs either in the cervical spine, which is the vertebrae that run down the neck or in the lumbar spine in the vertebrae of the lower back.
Degenerative disc disease can worsen and even lead to permanent nerve damage if not diagnosed early. The good news is invasive surgery isn’t usually required, and chiropractic treatment can reverse the pain and discomfort caused by degenerating discs.
What is Disc Degeneration?
The discs between our vertebrae act as shock absorbers from the normal daily pounding our spines endure. The discs have a thick outer layer and a spongy inner layer, and either as we age, or if our spines are under extreme stress, the outer layer can break down. The disc flattens, reducing the space between vertebrae. Sometimes the inner layer can leak out, pressing on surrounding nerves.
What Causes Disc Degeneration?
Discs naturally degenerate as we age. They can also break down through the strain of manual labor, a traumatic blow from something like a car accident, heavy lifting, or contact sports.
What are the Symptoms?
The symptoms of degenerative disc disease vary in severity and can present itself in different locations, depending on which vertebra in the spine is affected. When the disc degenerates, it can press on the surrounding nerves, which can be felt either down through the shoulders and arms, or through the buttocks and legs.
Symptoms can often either increase or decrease depending on the position of the body. Sitting for long periods, for example, might increase the pain. It might be relieved when we get up and walk around.
Because degenerative disc disease can worsen over time, proper diagnosis is the first step in treatment. Invasive surgery can usually be avoided. Degenerative disc remedies include particular movements and exercise to speed healing and decrease the pain and discomfort. Spinal manipulation can increase the space between vertebrae, alleviating the pain of disc degeneration, and reducing the chance of further injury.
