BPPV Causes and Treatment in Garden City, MI
BPPV stands for benign paroxysmal positional vertigo, and as the name suggests, the condition is benign, which simply put means that it is not seriously harmful. However, although the condition is benign, vertigo itself can have paralyzing and far-reaching consequences for daily life. Operating heavy machinery or working at height is impossible since a sudden onset of vertigo can be life-threatening.
The rest of the name provides the remaining meaning of the condition, paroxysmal means sudden onset and short-term, and positional is because it is brought on by movement.
Causes of BPPV
The cause of BPPV is usually an imbalance in the inner ear. We hear this term a lot, but what does it mean? Inside the inner ear are tiny crystals of calcium carbonate called otoconia, which sense acceleration. If these crystals become dislodged, they can clump together, and the resulting mass can send improper acceleration signals to the brain.
These signals are usually what causes the sensation of vertigo, a sensation of movement when you are still, or sensing an incorrect type of movement that conflicts with the visual stimulus, resulting in a sensation of imbalance or dizziness when walking, standing, or changing position.
Treatments for BPPV
The idea behind BPPV treatment is to return the crystals in the inner ear to their proper positions. Treatments involve manipulation or rapid, controlled movement of the head and neck in an attempt to separate and move the crystals.
The most common techniques used are the Semont maneuver, the Epley maneuver, or the Canalith repositioning maneuver. Less common, but potentially effective, are the half somersault of Foster maneuver and the Brandt-Daroff exercise. Movements that are effective are regularly repeated, typically at a minimum daily, till symptoms subside.
In very severe cases where movement therapy does not work, surgery may be an option. If you are looking for more help with BPPV causes and treatment, we can help you find a holistic solution.
